The learning environment for our current learning design is an online learning environment.
In a traditional learning environment, students have to rely on handwriting or typing to record class materials and what the instructors say during classes. An online learning environment allows students to access class materials at any time throughout the semester. If students missed or didn’t understand what the instructor said during the class, they can just rewatch the lecture video until they understand it. This allows students to deeply comprehend the information given by the instructor which provides them with more pathways to success.
According to the article “Is online education good or bad? And is this really the right question?” written by Fredericksen, E, one of the greatest advantages of an online learning environment is “enhanced access for students”. In early 2022, I had to visit Korea because of a family emergency. Fortunately, I was taking online courses during that time which gave me the option of continuously taking the courses instead of dropping them while I was in Korea. Online learning environments allow students to take classes not only in their own homes but also in other places and countries (Fredericksen, 2015). This allows students with difficult situations like myself in the past a chance to continue their studies. This also increases diversity among students where people from different backgrounds around the world can take the classes (Fredericksen, 2015).
According to the article “Study: Online classes really do work.” written by Chandler, D, online learning environments allow students to “learn as well as everybody else” and give “consistent results”. I have experienced this in my previous online courses where I gained substantial understanding and constantly received a grade similar to the most knowledgeable students in my class (Chandler, 2014). Online learning environments also utilize multimedia such as videos and audio. This significantly increases students’ interest in classes, keeps them motivated and increases the quality of the work they produce. This ultimately results in receiving better grades when compared to traditional learning environments.

Great blog post David! I agree with how online classes can be so flexible and very useful regarding accessibility especially for remote learning. Seeing how we’ll be catering to ELL learners and those who are mobile users with a data plan, it will certainly increase ease of access to learning resources. I do think we have to be wary of the concept information overload by avoiding display of irrelevant and incorrect information. I’m currently taking EDCI337 and Mayer’s redundancy principle is something our group can definitely apply!

We also use online learning, which is a very common way of learning. We get information online, attend classes, study, and participate in interactive learning. This way helps us to quickly obtain rich classroom resources. The online learning environment also uses video and audio multimedia. We break the traditional way of classroom. In class, we can also watch videos or consult materials, so we have a more interesting learning environment.

Hi David! I, too, prefer online learning! It gives a lot of flexibility regarding when/how to learn. At the same time, it requires a lot of autonomy, which may be challenging for some students. I wonder, how would your design support learners who have not developed any metacognitive skills and learning autonomy?

Hello David, I really enjoyed this post! I think you used great techniques and your inclusion of your personal experience was very impactful. I wonder what your opinion or suggestion is for those who are aren’t neuro-typical and their experience with online learning. I wonder also if there are any studies that confirm online learning boosts grade averages. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed your post! thanks so much
